Why us?
We teach mahjong like we host a party — everyone’s welcome, snacks are mandatory, and winning is just the cherry on top
Sure, you can learn mahjong anywhere — but with us, you’ll have fun doing it.We’re not just mahjong enthusiasts; we’re experienced educators who’ve spent years teaching and coaching adults. That means we know how to meet you where you are, break things down clearly, and adapt our teaching on the fly (we call it instructional agility). Whether you’re a quick study, a “let’s go over that one more time” learner, or somewhere in between, we’ve got you covered. Our sessions are equal parts strategy, story, and snack time. Expect laughter, lighthearted competition, and just enough wit to keep you on your toes. Prefer a calm, rules-first vibe? We can do that. Want a spicier, “winner-takes-all” table energy? We’ve got that too.At the end of the day, we believe mahjong is more than tiles and rules — it’s about creating a space where you feel welcome, connected, and excited to come back. And if there’s a plate of cookies or a charcuterie board in the middle of the table… well, we think that makes it even better.

Our Story

who we are
We’re Sarah and Stephenie — longtime neighbors, fast friends, and now co-founders of the Huntsville Mahjong Collective. We share a love for good conversation, great company, and the satisfying click of mahjong tiles.
how we got here
We’ve been neighbors for almost a decade — in two different neighborhoods — and our kids are so close they act like cousins. Over the years, we’ve shared countless evenings in driveways, backyards, and at the neighborhood pool, watching our kids play while we swapped stories and meals. Both of us are educators by trade, with most of our careers spent working with adult learners as instructional coaches and in school administration. That background gives us a unique perspective on teaching mahjong to players of all ages and experience levels. What began as a fun hobby soon grew into a passion for creating a welcoming, connected mahjong community in Huntsville.

why we do it
Mahjong is more than just a game — it’s a way to gather, connect, and belong. We love that it blends strategy and creativity, competition and camaraderie.Sarah is the creative, design-focused half of the duo — with an eye for style and cohesiveness that turns every game into an experience. She combines tiles, mats, tablecloths, and décor into seamless visual tapestries that make you want to sit down and play (and snap a photo). Strategic and analytical, she’s not just aiming to win — she’s making sure no one else gets there first. Integrity is one of her core values, and it shines through in every interaction.Stephenie is always ready for a group hangout and thrives on building community. Don’t let her social butterfly side fool you — she plays to win, every time. With community as her core value, she’s passionate about forming partnerships and finding creative ways to spotlight the people, businesses, and flavors that make Huntsville such a vibrant city.
Together, we’re here to share our love of mahjong, one game (and one friendship) at a time.
